The Smell of Chocolate
Launched in December 2003 by the WA Minister for Education, this children's book explores the special relationship between a boy named Ben and his grandfather, Pog, who has Alzheimer's disease. Readers can share fun and poignant moments in the lives of a family affected by dementia as they follow Ben and Pog s madcap and sometimes touching adventures. The book, written and illustrated by Perth author Barbara McGuire, was created in response to a lack of resources available for helping children understand what happens when elderly people develop dementia. It was developed in conjunction with Alzheimer's Australia WA Ltd and an $8000 donation from the University of WA PROSH appeal. Orders for The smell of chocolate can be placed with Alzheimer's Australia WA Ltd either by email: alzwa@alzheimers.asn.au or by phoning (08) 9388 2800.
