The Smell of Chocolate

Smell of ChocolateThe Smell of Chocolate
Written & illustrated by Barbara McGuire

Launched in December 2003 by the WA Minister for Education, this children's book explores the special relationship between a boy named Ben and his grandfather, Pog, who has Alzheimer's disease.  Readers can share fun and poignant moments in the lives of a family affected by dementia as they follow Ben and Pog s madcap and sometimes touching adventures.

The simple wording and colourful illustrations ensure the book is easy reading for both children and adults, while the fact file provides an avenue for further discussion. Aimed at children, the fact file section provides simple and easy to understand information about how and why Alzheimer's disease can affect older people.

The book, written and illustrated by Perth author Barbara McGuire, was created in response to a lack of resources available for helping children understand what happens when elderly people develop dementia. It was developed in conjunction with Alzheimer's Australia WA Ltd and an $8000 donation from the University of WA PROSH appeal.
