1. Dementia: Can it be Prevented?
    August 2005

The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of significant studies on protective and risk factors for dementia in general and Alzheimer's disease in particular. It does not set out to be a comprehensive review of all the available evidence or studies but does quote major papers where relevant. Nor is there complete agreement between medical experts.

2. Dementia Terminology Framework
    December 2004

This purpose of this paper is to promote the consistent use of appropriate language across Alzheimer's Australia nationally and to guide the language used by others in describing dementia. It outlines a framework of preferred terminology related to dementia and offers a brief rationale for the preferred use of each term.

3. Dementia Care and the Built Environment
   June 2004

This Postition Paper i

s presented as a contribution to the on-going debate about how to provide high quality care for people with dementia. It builds on the ideas presented in Alzheimer's Australia's well-received and widely distributed 2003 position paper Quality Dementia Care.

The paper provides a starting point for people to think about dementia design issues and highlights ways in which the challenges of designing for people with dementia can be met. While the paper focuses on residential facilities, either mainstream or dementia specific, many of the ideas presented will be relevant to the design of other facilities including respite centres and day activity centres.

4. Quality Dementia Care
    February 2003

The purpose of this paper is to promote an understanding of quality dementia care in both residential facilitieds and the community.  It is based on the experience of professional staff within Alzheimer's Australia and is referenced to acknowledge literature in this field.

We expect those working with people with dementia, whether in residential facilities or in the community, will find relevance in the issues outlined in this paper and be able to translate them in practical terms to their particular situation.

5. Stem Cell Research
    March 2002

This paper outlines Alzheimer's Australia's support for stem cell research, provided that appropriate ethical guidelines and oversight are in place.

6. Dementia: A major health problem for Australia
    September 2001

Dementia is shaping up to become one of the largest health issues for Australia.  The challenge for the whole community is how best to meet this.  As the 'baby boomers' are approaching the risky age group for dementia diseases (65 years and older) the number of people developing dementia will increase very rapidly.
