Respite

Respite provides alternate care for a person with dementia in order to give their carer some time away from their caring role.  Respite can take place in the home, at a day centre, at a home club or in a residential facility.  Alzheimer's Australia WA provides a community-based respite service underpinned by a person-centred care philosophy.

The types of respite available enable a flexible, creative response to the specialised needs of the person with dementia and their family.  Alzheimer's Australia WA does not provide residential facilities, however we encourage families who are considering their residential options to contact our support services staff for an informed discussion.

How to Obtain Respite?

General practitioners, carers, friends, health workers and community services agencies can make respite referrals.  A medical diagnosis of irreversible dementia is required before a referral is accepted.

How Much does Respite Cost?

Fees are charged at a minimal rate for each hour of service received and includes meals and beverages for Centre-based and Host Family Respite.  The State/Commonwealth Home and Community Care Programme (HACC) fund the range of respite services provided by Alzheimer's Australia WA.

Respite Staffing

Alzheimer's Australia WA offers an extremely experienced team of staff and volunteers who provide support and assistance each day, under the guidance of the Respite Services Coordinator.  The Respite Services Coordinator regularly monitors and reviews the service provided to clients and primary carers, and gives ongoing support and supervision to care workers.
